George Romney R.A.
(1734 - 1802)
Portrait of J.W. Williett
Oil on canvas
76 x 63,2 cm
Acc. No: 1626
Condition: A very thick layer of surface dirt and discoloured varnish covered the painting. Extensive drying cracks could be seen, particularly in the dark areas. Some of these drying cracks were filled in a previous restoration and retouched. The canvas was lined and the original tacking margins had been removed. The canvas is an unusual tabby twill weave.
Treatment: Surface dirt was removed with the appropriate reagent following tests. Following extensive further tests, it was found that the vanish layer and retouchings could not be removed separately. During this treatment photographic documentation was carried out. Once completed, dirt was removed from between the canvas and the stretcher bar. The backs of the canvas and stretcher were cleaned. A brush conservation varnish was applied. Retouching was carried out in the areas of the drying cracks using restoration colours and a final varnish applied. The frame was cleaned and the painting was secured using brass plates.
